One of the most common questions we hear at Debbie Cordeiro Designs is: "How much time do I need?" The answer depends on the type of work — but the short version is: always sooner than you think.
Alterations aren't just about taking in a seam or hemming a hem. A skilled seamstress like Debbie may need to rework the structure of a bodice, replace a zipper with a corset back, add bustle points, or rebuild a lining entirely. Each of these tasks requires careful fitting appointments, drying time between steps, and final pressing. Rushing this process is never ideal.
We recommend booking your bridal alterations 4 to 6 months before your wedding date. Your first fitting should ideally happen 3 months out, leaving time for 2–3 appointments and a final pickup 1–2 weeks before the big day. If you are purchasing a dress off the rack or from a consignment shop and it needs significant work, give yourself even more runway.
Book at least 6–8 weeks in advance. Coordinating multiple people's schedules takes time, and everyone in the party deserves a proper fitting — not a last-minute rush job.
Aim for 4–6 weeks before your event. Prom season (April–June) is one of the busiest times of year for alterations studios, so early booking is especially important.
Routine alterations — pants, blazers, casual dresses — can typically be completed in 1–2 weeks. However, during peak seasons (spring weddings, holiday parties), wait times may be longer.
At Debbie Cordeiro Designs, we always do our best to accommodate clients — but when a wedding is three weeks away and the dress still needs four fitting appointments, something has to give. Either the work is rushed (which affects quality), or some of the work simply cannot be completed in time.
We've seen the stress it causes brides and their families. Don't let it be you.
