5 Things to Look for When Choosing a Seamstress

Not all alterations are created equal. Whether you are getting a dress taken in or having something custom made, here is what separates a great seamstress from the rest.

Why Your Choice of Seamstress Matters

A wedding dress is arguably the most important garment you will ever wear. The alterations done to it can mean the difference between feeling like yourself — confident, comfortable, radiant — and spending your wedding day tugging at your bodice or worrying about a hem catching under your feet. This is not the place to cut corners.

1. Formal Training or Deep Experience

Look for a seamstress with either formal fashion education or decades of hands-on experience — ideally both. Debbie Cordeiro graduated with a B.A. in Fashion Production from Ryerson University and has been working with clients in Vaughan and the Greater Toronto Area since 2001. That kind of foundation matters when you are working with delicate fabrics like silk charmeuse, tulle, lace, and beaded appliqué.

2. Specialization in Bridal and Formalwear

A seamstress who primarily works on everyday clothing may not have experience with the complex construction of a bridal gown. Bridal alterations often involve working with layers of tulle and lining, repositioning boning, adding modesty panels, or converting a zipper back to a corset lace-up. Ask specifically about their bridal experience before booking.

3. Clear Communication and Realistic Timelines

A great seamstress will be honest with you about what can and cannot be done within your timeframe. If someone tells you they can complete full bridal alterations in a week, that is a red flag — either the work will be rushed, or they are underestimating the scope. Look for someone who gives you a clear timeline and sticks to it.

4. A Calm, Private Fitting Environment

You should feel comfortable and unhurried during your fittings. This is a vulnerable, personal process. A good alterations studio will give you privacy, a proper mirror, and a seamstress who listens more than she talks during the first appointment.

5. Attention to the Details No One Else Will Notice

The best seamstresses sweat the small stuff: matching lace patterns across seams, hand-stitching a hem rather than machine-stitching it, pressing each section individually rather than steaming the whole garment at once. Ask to see their work — previous client photos, samples, or even the finish on the inside of a garment.

A Note on Price

Alterations are skilled labour. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. Experienced seamstresses charge what the work is worth — and your dress is worth doing properly. That said, a higher price doesn't always mean better quality. Ask questions, look at examples of their work, and trust your instincts during the consultation.
